Abstract:
Compared to the laparoscopic surgery of the soft abdominal organs, relatively few robotic systems have been developed for the arthroscopic surgery involving hard tissues in bones and joints.  This talk will present engineering efforts towards the development of teleoperated surgical robot system for arthroscopic surgery, with initial applications for biportal endoscopic spine surgery (BESS). The talk will cover the design and integration of key hardware and software components, including a remote center of motion (RCM) mechanism, robotic surgical instruments, robot control software, and a navigation using stereo X-ray imaging and optical tracking.

Bio:
Chunwoo Kim is a Senior Researcher in the Center for Bionics Research at Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST).  He received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Johns Hopkins University and completed postdoctoral training as a Research Fellow at Harvard Medical School. His research focuses on engineering various surgical instruments and robot systems for minimally invasive surgery and image guided intervention.
