Setting up a computer in LCSR – wired Ethernet
There are 3 ways to connect a computer to wired network:
- DHCP: the computer receives IP address and name automatically. [preferred]
- Static private IP and permanent name.
- Static public IP and a permanent name.
The first one (option 1: DHCP) is the preferred way of connection; it’s fast, automatic and safe. The disadvantage is that the IP address and name will change automatically time to time, when the lease is expired.
The static IP and name provides a permanent connection. This is preferred if you connect to your computer from other places via VNC, SSH, Remote Access or other.
- A private IP (option 2) is visible from outside Homewood only through VPN.
- The public IP (option 3) means that your computer is directly visible from the Internet all the time, so you must strictly keep up with the security updates.
DCHP (dynamic) setup:
- Plug your computer to a blue power outlet
- Find a working network jack; watch the LED light turn on
- Open an web browser
- You should be automatically redirected to http://jhars.nts.jhu.edu/
- Click "Log on"
- Use your JHED ID and password to log in
- Click on "Register a dynamic IP address"
- Select the "Equipment Type" and “Operating System” (like: laptop/Mac OS X)
- Click "Next"
- Select "Computational Sciences" and click "Submit"
- Send an e-mail to LCSR Sys Admins so we know about the new computer.
Static IP and name (public or private):
- Send an e-mail to LCSR Sys Admins to add your computer to the DNS.
Wired Ethernet Connections
Hard-wired univeral (e.g. data or phone) RJ45 jacks are located throughout the building. All wall jacks are connected to a central data closet located on each floor. Each jack can be configured either as a 1000-Base-T Ethernet connection or as a telephone line (digital or analog).
The wall jacks are typically clustered in groups of three. At move-in time in August 2007, most clusters had one or two jacks configured as a 1000-Base-T Ethernet. If your computer's network card has a "connection active" LED, then this LED will light up when you connect to an active Ethernet connection.
If you would like to have a particular jack configured as Ethernet, submit a request here: http://it.jhu.edu/etso/customerservices/servicerequest.html
One can also send an email to service request. If the request has not been addressed within 24 hours, resend it and CC Dean Zariello.
Wired Phone Connections
Most rooms have a single RJ45 wall jack configured as a telephone line. Analog and digital lines are supported.
If you want to initiate, change, or terminate phone service, contact JHU Telecommunications by phone. Their contact information is here: http://www.it.jhu.edu/telecom/homewood/contact.html
Individual PIs are responsible for purchasing their own phones and for the monthly phone service charges. For rates and other information, see JHU Homewood Telecommunications home page is here: http://www.it.jhu.edu/telecom/homewood
You can purchase new phones from JHU Telecommunications or from a third party. Analog phones are supported. Digital phones must be compatible with JHU's digital PBX system. Compatible digital phone models are listed here: http://www.it.jhu.edu/telecom/homewood/phones.html
